Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail for fighting apartheid in South Africa. His struggle has remained a symbol for resilience in the fight against racial injustice, armed conflict and ethnic intolerance. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994 and brought about change that made the country follow the idea of a "Rainbow Nation", preventing civil war and turning South Africa into the continent's most prosperous country.
Who can apply?
Anyone who has ever held refugee status, lived in areas with armed conflicts (gang violence included) and/or coming from areas with frozen conflicts. The goal of this program is to join together people with this shared experience, often from conflicting sides, and to show them that their similarities should overcome the differences. All in hope to nurture future leaders who will bring about peace to their home countries.
The program takes 5 students every year.
